Finland

Coming to Estonia...
I used to live eleven years in Belgium, when suddenly my parents decided that we should move „back“ to Finland. When I moved to Finland a couple of years ago and finished my high school degree in Helsinki, I thought that I still had to discover more about life. So, I decided to study abroad. I have mostly lived abroad. I cannot really consider myself as a truly Finnish person; thus I had a strong will to study abroad. To move to Estonia was an easy decision. It is not too far away from Finland, and the language is related to Finnish. In Tallinn, a Finn might experience the joys of understanding what the locals are saying.

Before coming here...
Before I moved to Estonia, my impression was that every street corner had a beauty salon.Women were dressed in very feminine clothes. The street fashion has been rather a pleasant surprise after living a few years in Finland, where trainers and baggy clothes belong to the everyday street picture. I had also been in Old Town Tallinn three times before and I had the impression that Estonia is a beautiful country with a wonderful capital.

Student life in Estonia...
International organizations such as ESN are more active in Estonia than in Finland. There are so many different possibilities for international students to participate in different events, it is amazing! The best thing is that everyone can take part and your suggestions are always welcome!

Studying in Estonia...
As an international student in Estonia my views of life and different cultures have become even broader. I have always felt international and in Belgium I was surrounded every day by at least seven different nationalities. I have always been in an international school. However, at the European School I attended in Belgium, we had only people from other European countries. In Estonia, it feels like I am surrounded by the whole world - every single day. We have people in our university that come from countries, such as Indonesia, United States, China, Georgia, India, Egypt, South Africa. We have the whole world here! We do not only get to understand the European mentality, but we get to know other points of views as well. Here one becomes more openminded.

Best things that have happened to me in Estonia...
I have had the opportunity of meeting some of the greatest people, having the possibility to learn something new every single day and participating in exciting projects like for TMUN (Tallinn Model United Nations), The Orphanage project, and NESU (Nordic Economic Student Union).

My English vocabulary has increased tremendously, so has my knowledge about finances, economics, marketing and everything one has to know about business. If one wants to study international business, one should also be in an environment that gives you the opportunity. Tallinn has been a truly international capital with a great number of creative and young people. Tallinn gives you a lot of new opportunities.

I would tell others...
Living in the campus is an adventure. You do not want to be left out of it. At TTU, you will meet new, interesting people and discover something about yourself. University life is a once in life time experience and it is one of a kind in Estonia.

While being away from my home country, I miss the most...
I miss my family and high school friends I have left behind in Finland. Luckily, I am always able to visit them during weekends or vacations. I also miss some great people in Belgium and Belgian food!

Studying in Estonia is an international experience...
Being an international person means that you will have the advantage of knowing many different people from different cultures, learn different languages, have contacts around the globe and to enjoy every inch the world has to offer.

My future plans...
First of all, I am planning to finish my Bachelor studies. After that I want to discover Germany, as I am  half German. I have never had the opportunity to live there. I plan to continue my studies there.

The last thing I want to say...
Teretulemast Tallinnaan!
