30.06.2016

The University of Tartu International Summer University programme brings participants from Europe and the USA to study in Estonia. This time learners also include participants from various Asian countries—the Philippines, China, India, Iran, Japan and South-Korea. Popular courses address Lotman’s semiotics of culture and analyse the current political situation.

The ten programmes of International Summer University are mainly in the fields of social sciences and the humanities. Knowledge will be shared about cyber security, semiotics, international law, political and economic relations and other important topics which are related to Estonia and the Baltic countries.

Studies take place in Tartu, Tallinn and Pärnu but also abroad. The cooperation programme of three universities will take participants to Utrecht and Riga. The traditional Estonian language and culture courses, which began already in the 1990s, will also continue.

International Summer University programme “Secure e-Governance” in cooperation with Tallinn University of Technology will introduce the developments of e-Estonia.

UT International Summer University runs from the end of June until the beginning of August. On Monday, 4 July begin workshops which discuss the Baltic region and the political and economic relations between the European Union, NATO and Russia. The summer school of semiotics “Juri Lotman and the Semiotics of Culture”, which has gained popularity around the world, also begins on the same day.

“The semiotics programme about Juri Lotman and the semiotics of culture is exciting, of high academic quality and sparks interest around the world. Lecturers of the programme are leading experts of their field who will give an overview of the main bases of Juri Lotman’s works and also introduce the newest developments and approaches in the semiotics of culture,” said Senior Specialist for UT International Summer University Margot Must.

Numerous other international programmes, which are organised by the university’s faculties, also take place during the summer.
