Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu is the largest and most comprehensive university in Estonia and one of the most venerable centers of education and research in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, the University of Tartu has 9 faculties and 5 colleges across Estonia, in addition to several specialised research institutes. Tartu is home to 17,000 students, including 670 international students from more than 30 countries.
The University of Tartu is famous for research-based education and ranks amongst the top 600 in the world according to the 2009 THES-QS World University Rankings. The university is an active member of international associations such as the Utrecht Network, the Coimbra Group of Universities, and the Baltic Sea Region University Network.
The University of Tartu participates in six out of seven national Centres of Excellence for Research. On average, the University of Tartu awards 100 PhD degrees and university researchers publish over 3000 scientific articles annually. The University of Tartu is in the top 1% of the world’s most cited universities and scientific institutions in the fields of Clinical Medicine, Plant and Animal Science, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Social Sciences.
