In the 2025/2026 academic year, nearly 450 degree-seeking students and 300 international visiting students will start their studies in English-taught curricula at the University of Tartu.

This week, an orientation course is held at the University of Tartu’s Delta Centre, introducing the university and studies to the newly arrived international students and giving them information about everyday life in Estonia and Tartu.

The orientation course starts with a musical cultural experience where the duo Cätlin and Marko Mägi perform Estonian traditional music. On the opening day of the event, the international students are greeted by Anneli Saro, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. During the course, representatives of the University of Tartu Counselling Centre, the Academic Sports Club, Library, Tartu Welcome Centre, the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, and Tartu Linnatransport speak about the services and possibilities available to students. Associate Professor Kadri Suija from the Institute of Family Medicine and Public Health introduces the Estonian medical system. Several student organisations, including the university’s student union, the Erasmus Student Network Tartu and the international student ambassadors, introduce their activities.

This academic year, the largest number of students enrolled in English-taught degree programmes are from Ukraine and Azerbaijan. Most incoming students for a semester or a full academic year at the University of Tartu have arrived from Germany and France. Nearly 80% of all exchange students come to the University of Tartu through the Erasmus+ programme.
